Located in the ever-popular area of Belém, the building that hosts the museum of electricity is a striking hydro-electric plant that will make industrial enthusiasts and architecture fans drool. Recently incorporated into the larger MAAT (Museum of Architecture and Technology), this fantastic museum isn’t just reserved for grown-ups – it also happens to be one of the best things to do in Lisbon with kids.
I personally consider it one of the best free attractions Lisbon has on offer, with fantastic temporary exhibitions, two floors exploring several ways electricity has been produced and distributed throughout history, as well as a very child-friendly space filled with well-maintained machinery and fun experiments.
The museum also has scale models of other power-plants including the fabulous one from Lindoso, which we visited while in Geres.
There is a very educational and fun kids’ interactive area at at the end of the exhibition with light-bulb games, a train set that help children understand how batteries work and dozens of other activities that will keep little minds occupied for hours (we sometimes experience a tantrum when we need to leave).

VHILS EXHIBITION
The extraordinary graffiti/urban artist Vhils has a temporary exhibition at the museum (until October 5) – Dissection – where you can see some of the techniques and processes used by the artist (real name Alexandre Farto) to achieve the incredible and sometimes surreal end pieces.

TIPS
- How to get there: Tram 15 | Bus to Belem (exit Belem, then cross overpass to the river side) | Taxi €4 – €8
- Entrance fee: free
