Lisbon, with its rich history, stunning architecture, and warm hospitality, is a fantastic destination for families. One neighborhood that stands out is Belém, a charming district steeped in history and culture and the river Tagus as a backdrop. You’ll find ancient monuments to the traditional pastel de nata here, beautiful parks and art museums. It’s also where my mum lives, and we did for a few years, so you know it comes from someone in the know! In this post, I’ll guide you through an unforgettable family adventure in Belém, Lisbon.

Jerónimos Monastery
Get the elétrico (tram) number 15 and exit at Largo Princesa (see map) for the Belem Tower. After hitting Pasteis de Belem for an early morning coffee and custard tart, start your day at the Jerónimos Monastery (tip here is so start here if you want to visit, as queues are likely to get longer as the morning unfolds). most iconic landmarks. This architectural masterpiece showcases Manueline style with its intricate detailing and grandeur, and even the kids will be in awe of the ornate cloisters! Don’t forget to visit the church next to it, where you’ll find the tomb of Vasco da Gama.
Belém Tower / Torre de Belém
After the monastery, (grab another coffee if you need it) head towards the Belem Tower. This UNESCO World Heritage site has blending elements of Moorish and Manueline styles. Kids will love exploring the tower’s turrets and dungeons, imagining themselves as valiant knights or intrepid explorers.
Monument to the Discoveries
Next, make your way to the Monument to the Discoveries, an imposing structure honouring Portugal’s Age of Discovery. Keep the kids interested by pointing out specific people, but in case they get distracted there is plenty of space to run/scoot around. You may want to go to the top to catch the panoramic views of the Tagus River from the top.
Jardim Botânico da Ajuda: A tropical oasis
After the tower, head over to the Jardim Botânico Tropical, a lush tropical garden filled with exotic plants and wildlife. This tranquil oasis is a perfect place for a leisurely stroll, a picnic, or even a game of hide-and-seek amidst the vibrant greenery.
Museu Coleção Berardo: Artistic Inspiration for All Ages
For a dose of culture and creativity, head to the Museu Coleção Berardo. This modern art museum boasts an impressive collection of contemporary works that will captivate both adults and kids. Engage in interactive exhibits and watch as your children’s imaginations come to life.
